1) WEN 6510 Oscillating Spindle Sander Review

WEN 6510 Oscillating Spindle Sander
WEN 6510 Oscillating Spindle Sander

When you receive the Wen 6510 spindle sander, there is not much assembly required and you can use it pretty much right away after placing a spindle with a sanding sleeve. The motor is very smooth and quiet.  This spindle sander is very light weighted but still very stable to use. With a ½ HP 3.5 amp motor and 6 sanding sleeves, there are not much spindle sander applications it cannot handle.

The dust collection is excellent hooked up to a shop vac but you will need an adaptor to connect. The spindle moves 58 oscillations per minute and its stroke is 5/8 inches. The 5/8 inch spindle stroke is available in many inexpensive units and it is somewhat small oscillation range. You may have to flip the sanding sleeve over occasionally to wear it evenly.

There are several other oscillating spindle sanders available in the market which are very similar as the Wen 6510 – Triton TSPS450 Oscillating Spindle Sander, Shop Fox W1831 1/2 HP Single Phase Oscillating Spindle Sander, and Grizzly G0739 Oscillating Spindle Sander. Their design and specification are almost same with different colors and slight different weight and dimensions. Therefore, other models are not separately reviewed here. The Wen 6510 is the least expensive of them.

Pros

  • Good dust collection
  • Smooth and quiet operation
  • Built-in accessory storage
  • Easy to change spindles

Cons

  • May need an adaptor to connect dust collection
  • 5/8 inch spindle stroke

JET 708404 JBOS-5 5-1/2 Inch 1/2 Horsepower Benchtop Oscillating Spindle Sander with Spindle Assortment

The quality of Jet product is known to be high and this oscillating spindle sander is no exception. It is very heavy and solidly built because its base is all metal comparing many other models base are plastic. It has a powerful ½ HP motor and operates very quiet. It equipped with a large cast iron table which can tilt to deal with bevel sanding applications. The sanding result is excellent.

To accommodate the tilting feature, this model has more open area between the table and base than other sanders, which affect the dust collection performance and some dust escape. Five size spindles are provided but a larger 3 inch one is not included comparing with other models. Some people complained the unit was damaged and not working when they received from online purchase, which is not the quality problem but still resulted in the suffering of the rating. It may be because it is heavy and was not cared well when shipped.

Pros

  • 1 inch spindle stroke
  • Sturdy construction for reliability and durability
  • Tilting table
  • Easy to change spindles
  • Quiet operation

Cons

  • 3 inch spindle is not included
  • Some dust collection problem

3) Grizzly G0538 1/3 HP Oscillating Spindle Sander Review

Grizzly G0538 1/3 HP Oscillating Spindle Sander
Grizzly G0538 1/3 HP Oscillating Spindle Sander

This unit is well designed and will allow you to smooth any type of spindle sanding surface. The table is a manufactured wood and the base is constructed of plastic. Six different sanding drums are provided like most other spindle sanders. They are neatly stored under the table and changing them is a snap.

The spindle stroke is a rather small range of 5/8 inches, which will limit the thickness of the piece you can sand or the applied area in the sanding sleeve. The dust collection system is efficient but very noisy. It has a 1/3 HP motor at 1,725 RPM which will not bog down in usual jobs unless you really apply extreme pressure. It would be a perfect fit for the occasional or moderate intensity applications.

Pros

  • Quick change of sleeve with storage area
  • Effective dust collection
  • Smooth operation

Cons

  • 1/3 HP motor
  • Noisy when hooked up to a vacuum
  • 5/8 inch spindle stroke

This oscillating spindle sander is often considered as a “double agent” machine which can act as both an oscillating spindle sander as well as an oscillating edge belt sander. Typically, most woodworkers review their tools depending on experience right after they purchase the tool.

However, what makes this model a standout is the fact that it comes with a durability that is not easily anticipated by most people. This is the reason why most feedbacks coming from users who have used this product for more than a year claim that this is the best one that they have ever seen.

It comes with great features that make it a very high performing tool. For instance, its ball bearing construction offers smooth construction, along with a long life. At the same time, its rotary and oscillating motion offers burn-free, fast finishes on the edges, contours, faces, both inside and outside curves. It also has a tool free conversion starting from the belt and spindle changes which are both easy and quick, without the use of any tools.
